Each spring Minnesota's best whitewater paddlers converge on the North Shore of Lake Superior to take advantage of the spring thaw which raises the creeks and rivers or the area to levels many times the norm. These high waters allow paddlers to navigate waterways that are to low to run for the rest of the year. Because the water is so cold and the conditions often inhospitable, full dry suits and helmets are mandatory gear - this is not paddling for the faint of heart. Broken boats and lost paddles are the norm, and trips to the ER are not uncommon.
